Shakespeare Hotel, Surry Hills

By Noodlies Sydney food blog guest reviewer, KLui.

A hidden gem located at the quiet side of Surry Hills. Devonshire St is such an amazing dining place – filled with unexpected restaurants. Can’t explain with words, just have to go there and see it yourself.

Shakespeare Hotel looked like a rundown 3 storey building from the outside. The ground floor was a really old bar and a plain looking bistro. The 2nd and 3rd were so different – fancy Victorian style room, modern dining room, mini bar and table-filled corridor all packed with people. A really good buzz!

Somehow, I didn't expect it to be packed with people in their 20s-40s, all having a drink or two with their bistro meal. The bistro menu was so awesome and extensive – everything is under $10 and no condition applies. There’s more than 20 dishes available and the portions are pretty generous too.

Chilli Salt and Pepper Squid
Crunchy Squid nicely flavoured with spice – perfectly with beer!

Vegetarian Pizza
Always love to try a vegetarian dish to test out the chef. The crispy pizza base had a good thickness and I loved the rocket and avocado topping.

Braised Lamb Shanks
Don’t think anyone would expect a delicious lamb shank dish on a $10 menu, but Shakespeare’s got it! It was so tasty and fantastic value for the amount of work required for this plate.

Grilled Chicken Parma
Grilled chicken with grilled eggplant, smoke ham, mozzarella and parmesan cheese in napolitana sauce. Love the juicy tender chicken and the fresh tomato sauce. Chicken parma had never been so refreshing for me!

Grilled Barramundi Fillet with Chips and Salad
The fillet was cooked to perfection and the size was quite big compared to many other fish and chips that I've had. The steakhouse cut chips were so nice – hot, crunchy and spiced!
