Gourmet Safari: Paesanella, Marrickville

Paesanella is a small factory in the back street of Marrickville that make an amazing range of cheese including ricotta and wonderful italian cheeses like mozzarella, stracchino, marscapone and more - they're made fresh every day.  Paesanella supplies to Simon Johnson, Harris Farm and other fine food stores.

We were lucky enough to get a behind the scene tour of this immaculately clean cheese manufacturer.

At the end of the tour Gracie and her team gave us the opportunity to sample so many wonderful types of cheeses including mozzarela (above), burrata: bocconcini shell and curd and fresco: buffalo milk mozzarella!  Apparently bufallo milk is better because it is both high in protein and low in cholesterol.

Gourmet Safari: GS Roasting, Marrickville

First stop on our Gourmet Safari with Maeve O'Meara was GS Roasting in Marrickville where George Sabados, master coffee roaster and owner made us each a cup of coffee.

He talked about his love of coffee and the challenges of working in the coffee industry, which was fascinating.  George gave us tips on making the best cup of coffee including selecting a grinder, stove top coffee maker, even how to pour hot water into a coffee plunger.

The wonderfully fresh, aromatic and tasty coffee went amazingly well with the gourmet shortbread biscuits and Greek baklava.

Marrickville Banh Mi Thit (Vietnamese Pork Rolls)

By Noodlies Sydney food blog guest reviewer, KLui.

I was passing by this tiny little shop (literally a hole in the wall) and didn't expect much, but it was surprisingly great!

This place only offers Vietnamese style bread rolls. The menu is simple - pork roll, BBQ pork roll, chicken roll, tuna roll, pork skin roll, meatball roll and salad roll!

I specifically loved their pork roll because of the amazing homemade pate that it came with! It'd even be better when the bread has just come straight out of the oven!

Look! The size is huge especially for it's price!

The place must be ok, it's even listed on Urbanspoon.

Nhat Tan, Marrickville

One of our very favourite haunts, and we were there two sometimes three times a week was Nhat Tan noodle house - that is, when we were living in the inner city. I think the first time I ate there would have been over 20 years ago... and it's still there, looking pretty much the same.

Nhat Tan might have had a quick touch up 8 years ago... but there was little change even then.. and by now, time has taken its course.

However, the soup is one of the clearest and sweetest in town... and that includes even places in the Cabra area. Everything is always fresh, even the basil and bean sprouts (hint, you can tell if a place is doing well if their condiments are fresh). However, today, I thought the rice noodles were abit brittle... I prefer mine with abit more glugginess... but still the soup is VERY delicious.. it's an Pho institution in Marricville.
