Ms. G's, Modern Asian, Potts Point

Ms G's is generating a real buzz around Sydney.  noodlies dispatched contributor, KLui to report on Dan Hong's latest funky, culinary adventure. Here's her report...

I was so lucky to catch March into Merivale. I've heard so much about Ms G's, the awesome sealed cocktails and its heady Asian fusion cuisine. And it was busy the night we went, due to its popularity, I "waited" at the bar for over 30 min, the cocktails did seem to make time go by a lot quicker.

I loooove their innovative Asian inspired cocktail list! Go the chinoise, oriental funk!
  • Pina 'pearl' colada - the green sago pearls glow in the dark
  • Tango Jack - rum, fernet brance, jack fruit, apricot, apple juice

ABC 702 Sydney Radio Outside Broadcast Lakemba Mosque

Weekends with Simon Marnie on ABC 702 Sydney was broadcasting live today at the Lakemba Mosque Open Day 2011.

There were lots of loyal listeners who came along to see Simon and experience something new and different at the Mosque.  Simon tasked noodlies to do a really fun segment;  where we took two ABC listeners into Lakemba town centre, to shop, eat and bring our discoveries back to share with Simon and his listeners, live on air!  Check out the interview below, my adventures with Kate and Jack and noodlies contributor KLui!

25th Floor Restaurant, Modern Australian, Darlinghurst

By Noodlies, Sydney food blog guest reviewer, KLui.

Where can I find a quiet restaurant that overlooks the Harbour Bridge, Opera House and Centre Point Tower at the same time? 25th Floor at Woolloomooloo, of course.

grilled sourdough

Grilled sourdough bread with slow roasted tomatoes, caramelized onion and olive: the chargrilled bread is so crispy and the taste is so much better than toast of course.

The Meeting Point, Haymarket

By Noodlies, Sydney food blog guest reviewer, KLui.

meeting point

This new Taiwanese restaurant has taken over the place from an Internet Café, and that explains its cyber interior.

Mixed “jewels” and dried tofu in special soya sauce: this is a very extreme dish. I think you can guess why (hint: have a look at the cuts of meat)

pork chop noodles

Deep fried pork chop noodle soup: the clear stock is so rich and thick that you’ll fall in love with it!

beef noodles

Beef noodle soup: this beef soup is very rich as well but it’s a different story from the clear soup above. The hot and sour tastes from the chilli and tomatoes have made the soup very exciting!

Grapefruit Green Tea and Roselle Tea: both refreshing drinks are great after a big meal.

Masuya Japanese Seafood Restaurant, Sydney

By Noodlies, Sydney food blog guest reviewer, KLui

Masuya Japanese Seafood is a great place to eat with friends! Plenty of spaces between tables! The food served is fresh and delicious!

Entrée – Sea Urchin Sushi Boat: people either love it or hate it. It all comes to the creaminess and freshness of the urchin.

Meet Fresh, Chinatown, Sydney

By Noodlies Sydney food blog guest reviewer, KLui.

There's always a long line outside of this dessert place every since opening. It's been a month now and the line has not reduced at all.

Meet Fresh specialises in Taiwanese desserts - they are most famous for Taro Balls, Tofu Dessert and Grass Jelly!

The best is the mix and match where you can try many things at once.

Tofu dessert with taro balls - The silky smooth tofu has a strong soy bean taste that you can rarely taste anywhere in Sydney.  Anyone who tried the chewy taro balls would fall in love with it! Yum!

Grass jelly with taro balls and beans - one of Meet Fresh's signature dishes! Grass Jelly always polarises opinions. The herbal taste can be overwhelming but it's a star for grass jelly lovers!

You may also add milk and peanuts in it too! The wide range of texture in one bowl makes it quite interesting too.

Marrickville Banh Mi Thit (Vietnamese Pork Rolls)

By Noodlies Sydney food blog guest reviewer, KLui.

I was passing by this tiny little shop (literally a hole in the wall) and didn't expect much, but it was surprisingly great!

This place only offers Vietnamese style bread rolls. The menu is simple - pork roll, BBQ pork roll, chicken roll, tuna roll, pork skin roll, meatball roll and salad roll!

I specifically loved their pork roll because of the amazing homemade pate that it came with! It'd even be better when the bread has just come straight out of the oven!

Look! The size is huge especially for it's price!

The place must be ok, it's even listed on Urbanspoon.

Not Bread Alone Cafe, Artarmon

By Noodlies Sydney food blog guest reviewer, KLui.

This cafe is in one of those homemaker centres and is right behind where I work.  There's a bit of everything on their menu. I was glad that I went with a couple of friends because we got to taste something different on the menu.

Rump steak in mushroom sauce with mash
A good size steak for lunch! Though I may have enjoyed it much more with a good glass of Cabernet Merlot. Too bad it's lunch time!

Bund Restaurant & Karaoke, Chinese, Chinatown

By Noodlies Sydney food blog guest reviewer, KLui.

Shanghai cuisine is not as rich as other Northern Chinese cuisine, but they are so yummy. This is a great place to be on a Friday evening. This fun place has a modern touch to it – unusual for Shanghai cuisine, plus it’s full of TV screens for Karaoke lovers as well.

Vegetarian dumplings
A unique way to wrap their dumplings – open top with split fillings. The split in the middle makes the whole dumpling different from the others. The pastry in the middle helps the filling to spread evenly.

Botanica at Sheraton on the Park, Sydney CBD

By Noodlies: Sydney food blog, guest reviewer, KLui.

It's been a while since my last hotel buffet simply because I am a big believer in cook-to-order. That's when food can be serve hot and just right! However, I love how buffet can offer a variety of food in small serves. Most important of all, the fun from creating my own food arrangement for the camera and being able to spontaneously choose your courses.

Haven't been so full for a long time! My stomach was about to explode.  Here's a few pics of what we had...

Salmon

Ripples at Sydney Wharf, Pyrmont

By Noodlies, Sydney food blog guest reviewer, KLui.

How great is it to have dinner with a bunch of friends overlooking gorgeous Sydney harbour? The seats at Ripples are outdoors but well sheltered. The five of us has had everything on the winter warmers menu except the steak. Let me take you through our food journey at Ripples...

Yamba prawn tart
Yamba prawn tart with creamed leek, feta cheese and tomato salsa: sensational short crust pastry! It tastes like very fine slices of shortbread underneath a yummy creamy mix with prawns on top.

Shinara Grill & Lounge

By Noodlies, Sydney food blog guest reviewer, KLui.

This would probably the only text-based review on noodlies ever but I refused to take out my camera out because the place was absolutely filled with BBQ smoke and smell from the grill at each table.

This Korean BBQ Buffet style is perfect for BIG-EATERS and STEAK LOVERS! From kim chi to potato noodles to seafood to meat! You can choose both fresh or marinated meats to cook at your table.  But just make sure you love meat.

OMG THE SELECTION: Wagyu style steak that is the size of my face if not bigger! Fine strings of fat evenly spread across the whole piece of steak... sensational!

For those who don't want to cook, there were also over 20 cooked dishes for your choice!

But be warned, don't wear your best clothes or bring out the camera!

Cique, St Margaret Surry Hills

By Noodlies, Sydney food blog guest reviewer, KLui.
By chance I stumbled across this new, fancy restaurant before its grand opening. Cique is a great place if you want to try something different. It's a joint venture between three enthusiasts who are each passionate about different but kinda complementary things; furniture design, food and drink...

As an Italian designer furniture showroom the environment is absolutely gorgeous. You get to sit on fantastic furniture while enjoying your meals. But note, Cique only serves canapes and desserts, not big meals.

Price-wise, it's actually very reasonable especially if you're inclined to try many types of food all at once. Everything is freshly made on site, even the bread for the bruschetta. Pastry fans would love this place... The variety of of baked delights and pastries was great; short crust, bread, cakes, tarts and etc... Rodg, one of the joint owners specialised in pastry when he was 'cooking' in Germany.

Citrus and lemongrass water
Far from just something that looks pretty on the bar, the Citrus and Lemongrass Water was great as a palate cleanser.  Strawberry Water and Lychee Water were available as other choices.

Bruschetteria 102, Surry Hills

The Nutella Coffee in its antique cup
By Noodlies, Sydney food blog guest reviewer, KLui.

Went to Bruschetteria 102 on the weekend right after finishing my 40 hour famine. You can probably tell by the name that it's a place that specializes in Bruschetta, but Nutella Coffee is also another recommendation by the owner, Luca. The "today special" on the blackboard had already caught my eye before I even stepped into the cafe - Duck eggs with Black Truffle. What a delicacy? However, I gave it a miss coz it was only 10.30am...

Their passion was shown all over the menu: first page - hand written introduction of Bruschetta. The menu was loaded with great combination of fine ingredients. Ever tried croissant with procuitta and buffulo mozzarella? Love the fact that they bring fine ingredients into simple dishes!

To give the food a test, I've ordered one really simple dish and one with richer flavour - Margherita Bruschetta and Italian Sausage Bruschetta. Overall, the bruschetta based was thinly sliced and slow toasted to give it a very crusty texture! Great stuff! I can also taste some quality olive oil being used at the cafe as well...I reckong this is really important especially for any light dish.

Margherita Bruschetta - The buffalo mozzarella and the fresh tomato sauce was good combination. Not too light but not overtaken by the cheese flavour either. The Italian Sausage Bruschetta, with homemade tzatziki - OMG! I think the sauce is the champion of the dish. It's thick but refreshing!

The Sugaroom, Pyrmont

By Noodlies, Sydney food blog guest reviewer, KLui.

The Sugaroom offered an 85% fine dining experience at Pyrmont with an exclusively quiet waterview. Usually a fine dining experience begins with quality breads and olive oil. This one started with one of their main courses.

Smoked rainbow trout nicoise
Smoked rainbow trout nicoise, poached egg, dill vinaigrette. An extremely light dish that'd require a soul. It needs some unique flavour to give it an extra lift.

Dukkah crusted lamb loin, baby beetroot, eschallots, pomegranate reduction

Forsyth Coffee, Naremburn

KLui
This great review by KLui, our new guest reviewer/contributor... expect to see more from her!

Great place for coffee drinking and learning! The whole place made me feel like I'd travelled to the country. There are different seating arrangements for different needs. I happened to like the downstairs outside backyard - so relaxing! The place was full of different coffee equipment and tea/coffees decorations that it felt like a museum - so amazing!

Roberto Coffee
Back to the coffee. I was planning to taste the world famous "kopi luwak" (cat poo coffee which costs around $1400/kg), but it has to be pre-booked and I need to find another two friends who would be willing to spend $50 on a cup of coffee... so mission dismissed and I had Roberto Coffee (the house bean of the day) instead.  The aroma was strong but not overwhelming nor acidic which is great. It's got a strong roasted flavour but not burnt. Easy to drink without any caramel or hazelnut flavour to dilute the sole coffee flavour. Very long (and I do mean long!) after-taste experience. The froth was smooth and silky. It's rare to taste such big difference between a latte and flat white thesedays and Forsyth do so well in the local area. Love how the latte wasn't just about milk!
