Churras The Brazilian Barbecue, Darlinghurst
All you can eat grilled meat, that's the simple proposition of Churras, a popular Brazilian restaurant on Oxford Street.
Rodizio is the more flamboyant and exotic description of this restaurant, where you pay a fixed price and the food is brought out continuously until you tell them to stop.
And some might think they've just seen god and gone to heaven with the heady mix of 16 types of meat served continuously by friendly, spunky Brazilian waiters. The selection is pretty extensive, several types of tender, juicy beef, lamb, pork neck, chorizo sausages, chicken wings... just to single out a few mouth watering offerings.
The meat is cooked over fire in an open kitchen on the ground floor (there's an additional 50 seats upstairs) and brought out regularly to your table in rotation. Watch the video below to see how it's done. On a Tuesday evening, Churras was relatively busy, but the system seems to work because our food came at frequent intervals.
In the old days, there was a colour code that you use at the table: red for stop, green for more meat. It's a bit of a gimmick and thankfully Churras doesn't do that any more.
What they do have is very yummy sides. It helps to cut the meat too, my favourite is the plate of banana, cassava and polenta (check out the video). The banana is ultra sweet and creamy... I could eat an entire plate.
Of course, you come to Churras for the handsome all you can eat meat, but I think this restaurant is more about the non-stop Brazilian celebration of love of life and friends. So you should come in a group and have carnival to laugh, love, live... and when the meat comes around.... eat.

ReplyDeleteI've only been to one rodizio restaurant in my country and I almost had a heart attack (not because of the price, but the amount of meat). This one looks more heart-friendly :) Banana, cassava and polenta... yum!
ReplyDeleteOh, you can still get a heart attack here too... we ate last tue when it was REALLY hot.. so wasn't too hard for me to resist the temptation to over eat.
